An Introduction to Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis
Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis technology arose in the mid 1980s, starting off with single frequency devices that mainly focused on fat-free mass. With our in-house development and collective vision for innovative technology, in 2003 we began to develop multi-frequency devices which we have progressively improved over the years, to measure a profound insight into body composition.
A total of four electrodes are used, two applied to the hand and two applied to the foot. A low-level battery current is passed through the body. Formulating an absolute measurement of impedance, phase, resistance, reactance and capacitance.
Measurements that Excel in Authenticity
The complete analysis of the patient will produce the results in less than ten seconds. The simple yet advanced touch screen interface will display the patient’s parameters such as Extracellular and Intracellular Fluids, Total Body Water, Fat and Fat Free Mass, Dry Weight, Mineral Composition & more. With definitive information provided without the need of complex clinical techniques such as radioisotope diluton.

Resistance
Impedance can be thought of as oposition to current flow, therefore a high impedance indicates not much current flow, and a low impedance will allow a larger current to flow. Unlike resistance which is a constant value, impedance can change with different frequencies.
Reactants
All capacitors exhibit reactants, this again is a quantity that provides opposition to current flow, it takes time for a capacitor to react, this time is part of the phase angle.
Impedance & Frequency
At low frequencies only the water outside the cells are able to conduct thus the impedance is a reflection of the level of ECW (Extracellular Water). At high frequencies the fluid inside the cells conducts as well therefore the impedance will be a reflection of both ECW & ICW (Intracellular Water).
Phase Angle
Phase angle is an expression of the time delay between the transmitted signal and the receiving signal. Healthy cells cause a significant time delay. A significant time delay between two signals represents a large phase angle, conversely a shorter time delay would be a smaller phase angle.
Capacitance
Healthy cells within the body especially muscle tissue have the capacity to store energy, when energy is applied to these cells it takes time to charge them up in this way cells can be considered as electrical capacitors.

Introduction Multi-frequency
Individuals with large FFM and TBW have less resistance to current flowing through their body compared to those having a smaller FFM. Therefore, Fat-Free Mass (FFM) can be predicted from Total Body Water (TBW).

Different Frequencies
At low frequency current travels around the cells (extracellular water or ECW). At high frequency current passes directly through the cells (intracellular water or ICW) and also around the cells (extracellular water or ECW).

A Standard Healthy Subject
A low level current is passed through the subject’s body and the impedance is measured. When water in the body is large the current flows more easily through the body with less resistance (R). The opposite occurs when the individual has a large amount of Body Fat. Adipose (fat) tissue is a poor conductor of electrical current due to its relatively, small water content.
