Non-invasive, Non-intrusive Assessment of Burn Patients

Burn patients undergo major complications. Effective assessment and management of Fluid and Nutritional is vital to help optimise better patient outcome and decrease complications and mortality.

Acute renal failure is one of the major complications of burns and it is accompanied by a high mortality rate.

Fluid and Nutritional assessment is vital for burn patients. Effective assessment and management can optimise wound healing and decrease complications and mortality. Precise body composition measurements are mandatory to detect loss of muscle mass and to counteract these changes.

  • Dehydration (DH)
  • Over hydration (Excess Fluid)
  • Extracellular Water (ECW)
  • Intracellular Water (ICW)
  • Total Body Water (TBW)
  • Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
  • Muscle Mass
  • Fat Mass
  • Malnutrition
  • Body Cell Mass (BCM)
  • Cellular Biomarker (Phase Angle)
  • Creatinine Clearance

Early detection and prevention:

  • Fluid loss, hypovolemia and shock
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Renal damage
  • Increased metabolic rate leading to acute weight loss
  • Increased plasma viscosity and thrombosis
  • Muscle damage
  • Infection

Accurate Assessment of Lean Body Mass

Fluid management in major burn injuries is a challenge, the objective is to maintain adequate tissue perfusion in the early stage of burn shock when hypovolemia finally occurs due to steady fluid extravasation from the intravascular compartment. Severe burn patients also undergo metabolic imbalances. Burn injury causes a persistent and prolonged hypermetabolic state and increased catabolism that results in increased muscle wasting.

Accurate assessment of lean body mass (LBM) after a severe burn is an important goal of modern burn treatment for short- and long-term therapeutic decisions. Nutrition assessment in these patients is imperative, failure to meet their energy requirements has shown to cause impaired wound healing, organ dysfunction, and susceptibility to infection.
